FASCINATING FASCIA & MOVEMENT CHAINS

Dear Yoga Friends,

What is fascia? What is its purpose in my body?
How does it relate to Movement Chains?

In this 6 week series we will trace our fascia lines through a series of soft yet powerful Yin & Restorative yoga practices.

We will explore:

  • How to feel the effects of moving with awareness, via the various fascia lines in our own body, and why this is important.
  • Becoming aware of how "...strain, tension (good and bad), trauma, and movement tend to be passed through the structure along the fascial lines of transmission." Anatomy Trains, Tom Myers
  • Experiencing these lines in relation to the valuable Movement Chains, as described in Critical Alignment Yoga.
  • How the various parts of the body communicate with one another, forming movement chains in which small movements are passed along through the body systems.
  • How these movement chains are the foundation of larger movements, and how a problem in one part of the body can originate in an entirely different part.

This series is an invitation to feel the connection to your fascial layers, discover where there is resistance, tension, and blockages, and through knowledge of movement chains, practicing releasing poses, to embody more deeply in yourself with openness, fluidness, and ease.

20th August - The Superficial Back Line (SBL)

Connects and protects the entire posterior (back) surface of the body, from the bottom of the feet to the top of the head in two long pieces - toes to knees and knees to brow.
Function: extends the body and holds it upright against gravity; think posture and standing tall.

Our Focus: Balancing forward bends & backbends with standing balances.

27th August - Superficial Front Line (SFL)

The SFL connects the entire front side of the body from the top of the feet to the sides of the skull in two pieces - toes to pelvis & pelvis to head.
Function: flexes the body forward and balances the SBL; protects the vulnerable front of the body.

Our Focus: Continuing balancing forward bends and backbends through somatic movements

10th September - The Lateral Line (LL)

Runs up the sides of the body, from the outside edge of the foot, up the side of the body, under the shoulder, to the skull in the region of the ear.
Function: controls side-bending and rotation, and balances movements from the front and back lines — key for lateral stability.

Our Focus: Side bending

17th September - The Spiral Lines (SPL) & The Functional Lines (FL)

The SPL loop around the body in two opposing helices.
The FL: one runs across the front of the body, and one across the back of the body, forming an X across the torso.
SPL Function: creates and controls rotational movement, and helps maintain balance in all planes.
FL Function: adds extra power and stability for athletic, cross-body movements like throwing, kicking, or walking arm-swing.

Our Focus: Crossing the midline and twisting

24th September - The Deep Front Line (DFL)

The DFL is made up of the body's myofascial "core". The deepest line, running from the arches of the feet, up the inside of the legs, through the pelvic floor & abdominal core, up alongside the spine, to the jaw. Function: the body's core support line — stabilizes each joint from the inside, involved in breathing and deep postural support.

Our Focus: The relationship between pelvic stability, core strength and the jaw.

1st October - The Arm Lines

Four lines (Deep/Superficial Front Arm Lines, Deep/Superficial Back Arm Lines) connecting the axial skeleton (spine, ribs) out through the shoulders and arms to the fingers.
Function: stabilizes and moves the shoulder girdle and arm, links hand movements back to the core.

Our Focus: Stabilizing and strengthening the connection between the head, neck, upper body, arms and shoulders, while being aware of postural strength.

Seva project

In Yoga, SEVA (Say-va) is a Sanskrit word for service - how can we serve others and give back to society. Through my yoga practice and teaching, I aim to give back to my childhood community in a small and meaningful way. Since I grew up in South Africa, this is where my heart lies in an attempt to empower young children in the Lidgetton community where it is often challenging to have hope and see the light. Our small Angel Ruth’s Soup Kitchen is a space where the children can go for a warm meal, as well as to a space where they know they are safe and cared for, can play freely and learn.

I offer a percentage of my teaching earnings back into this community, knowing that is is well used and goes directly to the source. To support the growing needs in the Lidgetton community, we set-up Lucky Beans e.V. in Germany in 2015. Through our charity status we are able to offer the possibility of EU citizens receiving a tax reclamation from any donation you may wish to make.
